News
Our BARC President Robin Lattimer received the Chairman’s Choice Award from Steuben County Republican Chairman Bill Hatch at the Steuben County Republican Committee’s Annual Dinner held in Bath on Thursday, October 29, 2009. In presenting this award, Chairman Hatch stated: "In appreciation of your nearly twenty years of service and dedication to the Steuben County Republican Committee. We can always depend on you to step up to move the party forward. We’re grateful for your commitment to the principles and values of the Republican Party and for your service to your constituents. Thanks for being ’my right hand’." Robin is very deserving of this award. In accepting her award, she stated, "I share the credit with the many volunteers who work in the trenches to advance the cause." She is shown to the right holding her plaque.
May 2010 Meeting:
We did not have a formal program for our May meeting. We socialized and discussed possible ways to increase membership for our club. The possibility of having a social event for the public during the summer with a prominent speaker sucha as Bill Nojay was discussed. It was decided to check on the VFW pavilian availability and a speaker availability for this project. 50/50 raffle tickets were distributed for sale. The drawing will be held at our August meeting.
Our scheduled February meeting was cancelled due to severe weather.
January 2010 Meeting:
We met at the Bath Country Club on January 28th. Our speaker for the evening was Patrick Donnelly (our Treasurer) who was recently elected as the Chairman of the Steuben County Legislature. He discussed his many and varied duties as Chairman and brought us up to date with Steuben County Government. His interesting talk focused on the anticipated budget problems the County will be facing this year. Our club is still without a recording secretary. Our first vice president has volunteered to help out with this duty. However, she will be running the February meeting in the absence of our president. The February meeting will be a candidates night for the Bath Village Elections.
December 2009 Meeting:
Our Holiday Meeting was held at the Bath County Club on December 3, 2009. Joe Sempolinski, Tom Reed’s Campaign Manager spoke briefly to the group on behalf of Tom’s candidacy for our Congressman. We enjoyed a lovely dinner and socialized. Chilldren’s books were collected for donation to the Women’s Shelter and a small auction was held. All members who have not sent in their dues are requested to do so now so our submission to NYSFRW and NFRW can be made in a timely manner. We will have a board meeting in January to plan the schedule for 2010.
October 2009 Meeting:
Our October Meeting was a Candidates’ Night and we were briefly spoken to by: Robert Cole, candidate for Steuben County Coroner; Fred Muller, candidate for Bath Town Supervisor; Patrick Donnelly, candidate for Steuben County Legislator District 3; and Robin Lattimer, candidate for Bath Town Councilman. It was decided to publish a political ad from the BARC in the Steuben Courier, a weekly newspaper, even if there was not much competition this year to help keep public awareness of our club. The drawing for our annual 50/50 was completed and the winning ticket belonged to Charlie Brown, the recently deceased husband of our member and Ways and Means Chair, Niki Brown. The club members were proud to have this given in his name. Also, the meeting 50/50 was won by Niki Brown herself.
August 2009 Meeting:
Vickie Olin, Republican Election Commissioner for Steuben County, discussed the new voting machines that will be used in the September Primary and November General elections this year. The old "lever-type" voting machines were outlawed at the end of last year and can no longer be used. Steuben County has 80 new voting machines, and 50 other counties in New York State also use this type of machine. Copies of the paper ballots were distributed for the members to see, and Vickie commented that she has conducted and will conduct many more voter and worker training sessions. Elections personnel and volunteers maintained a booth at the county fair to demonstrate the machines and ask voters about any concerns they might have. Vickie also mentioned that once voters have a chance to try the new machine and experience how easy it is to use, they seem to have no problem with it. A continuing issue is the logistics of delivering the voting machines to the polling sites throughout the county, as a "chain-of-custody" must be established and maintained for the machines. There is a great shortage of Inspectors and Custodians to work at the polling places and service the machines. The State recently changed the rules that required Inspectors to be on-site at his/her assigned polling site for the entire duration of voting hours, which could have been as long as 18 hours in the General election. The Inspectors are now allowed to work split-shifts in hope that more people will enroll as Inspectors.
